Description

This Speaker Series recording we join Annajean Hamel, Lead Preparator and Paper Conservation Technician at Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) in Andover, Mass. as she discusses “Non-Adhesive Mounting Techniques”.  These will include photo-corners, openable corners, strip hinges and Z-trays.

Non-adhesive attachments are useful for matting and framing, and in storage and packing applications. All these techniques for works on paper require the use of appropriate materials, such as acid-free and lignin-free papers, archival-grade polyester films and tapes, or adhesives that pass the PAT (Photographic Acitvity Test).

Hamel, who studied Painting and Sculpture at Massachusetts College of Art and The Art Institute of Boston, is experienced in the care and handling of fine art and significant cultural heritage collections. She has worked in the field of conservation and museum exhibitions since 2006, including positions at the MIT Museum of Science and Technology and the
Smith College Museum of Art, as well as a previous position as conservation technician and preparator at NEDCC from 2013 to 2017.

As Lead Preparator at NEDCC, she performs duties that complement the work of the Center’s conservators, including the creation of mats and mounts, all aspects of framing, assisting the registrar in handling of collection materials, and performing technician-level conservation procedures.
