William began his career at the Smithsonian Institution National Portrait Gallery as a museum conservator, specializing in the treatment of picture frames. In 1982, he opened Gold Leaf Studios in Washington, D.C. His clients have included The White House, U.S. State Department, the National Park Service, museums, and private collections. In 1991, he was awarded the Rome Prize in Design from The American Academy in Rome.

conducts seminars and workshops at industry events.
